Fairfield Glade Resident Services, an entirely volunteer managed non-for-profit, announces the beginning a new program to serve our community.  Based on comments and feedback from the community, FGRS discovered that many homeowners have household maintenance or safety issues that they cannot address.

Maintenance and Safety Assistance was formed to provide home repairs and safety improvements to residents who are not physically able to perform “handyman” chores around their house.   The Goal of MSA is to allow residents to safely maintain their lifestyle in their own home by providing skills and volunteers to perform these tasks.  The leadership of the new Program has over 60 years of construction experience.

Some of the jobs around the house are easily completed, such as:

  • Grab bars in the tub or shower
  • Grab bars around toilet
  • Lever door handles – exterior and interior
  • Passage hardware on doors (non-locking)
  • Easy to use faucets
  • Drawer and cabinet door pulls that are easy to use
  • Exterior Steps Railings
  • Smoke alarms are operable (install if not present)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Secure handrails on stairs
  • “Comfort” height toilets
  • Change HVAC filters

Others are more elaborate, but equally important, for example:

  • Ramp at the main entrance door
  • Fireplace / chimney in safe working condition
  • Nonskid floors
  • Non-skid stair treads
  • Widen doors (interior) to 36”
  • Wheelchair accessible sinks / fixtures

MSA will also perform a safety check of your home in these areas:

  • Fall Safety
  • Fire Safety
  • Bathroom Safety
  • Staircase Safety
  • Kitchen Safety
  • Bedroom Safety
  • Living Area Safety
  • Exterior Safety

Each of these areas has unique safety concerns that will be identified and addressed, with the permission of the homeowner.

We do have some requirements:

A homeowner must meet one or more of the following criteria to be considered eligible for assistance through the MSA program: handicapped, disabled veteran or a spouse of a veteran, or a single head of household (single parent) with children under 18 years old living at home.

A homeowner must be a resident in their own home.  The resident must have lived at their current residence for a minimum of 2 years.
